Violin/Viola Program

Strings Program founder Susan Pascale has developed what she calls a "new school" approach to teaching violin and viola—an accelerated method of instruction that emphasizes positive reinforcement.

Beginning Violin/Viola - Playing the violin is complicated, but when it's broken down into simple tasks, it becomes easy. In these group classes, we emphasize proper form and techniques right from the beginning. Our standards are high but we keep it fun by playing games, and offering plenty of prizes and rewards. Parents are encouraged to attend class but for those who are unable to come, children are provided with weekly checklists and clear instruction to follow at home. By the end of 13 weeks, says children are ready for their graduating group performance, which takes place in a formal concert hall setting. All departments participate in this extraordinary event. Beginning violin graduates are eligible for the Training Orchestra.

Private Violin and Viola Lessons are offered to students at all levels, beginning through advanced. The program follows a curriculum with 6 levels: Kinder, Beginner, Advanced Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and Professional. Each level has clear requirements and objectives. Twice a year, each student will play in front of a panel of teachers, who will offer constructive feedback as well as a rating. The system ensures that students continue to progress.

When students are ready, they will be invited to participate in studio classes, formal recitals, ensembles, and special events, including trips. We also help students prepare for auditions for the Los Angeles Country High School for the Arts, the Colburn School, etc.

KinderStrings™ I Violin is a group violin class designed for children ages 4 1/2 to 7. The classes are small (no more than six students), so children receive plenty of individual attention. With fun games and positive reinforcement, including stickers and prizes, the children learn the basics of note-reading, rhythm, pitch, and the discipline of playing an instrument. At the end of the session, the children participate in a graduating group performance, which takes place in a formal concert hall setting. All the Strings Program departments participate in this extraordinary event.

KinderStrings® II Violin is a continuation of KinderStrings® I. Proper techniques are reinforced and there is more emphasis on note-reading. At the conclusion of this class, many students enroll in private lessons, and most will be ready for Training Orchestra.
