Training Orchestra

Training Orchestra is open to graduates of our beginning violin, viola, cello or bass classes; or, to string players who are currently studying in the Strings Program and have played their instruments for a minimum of three months.

There are two semesters of Training Orchestra each year: September through December, and January through May. This entry-level class is key for new players who would like to expand their music reading abilities, learn to listen, and play with a group. When the students first enter this orchestra, many have never experienced playing with another child. The Training Orchestra offers a unique and inspiring opportunity for them to experience what it's like to play in a real orchestra. “They get hooked and work harder. It even makes it easier for parents and teachers to get the children to practice,” says orchestra director Susan Pascale.

“I just love teaching this class,” she adds, “because it’s here that I see the most dramatic improvement in a short amount of time. By the last class, parents are astounded by the improvement and smitten to see their little one sitting in a real orchestra, dangling feet and all.”

Over the years, Pascale has learned that the winning combination for beginning students is to study privately with a good teacher, and to play with a group. Along with developing new musical skills, students develop camaraderie. It also gives the director more opportunities to oversee the progress of each student, and help them develop healthy practicing goals. It helps motivate and inspire the students to reach for higher goals.

At any time, Training Orchestra members can audition for the next level, the LA Children's Orchestra.
