Piano and KinderPiano®
KinderPiano® Classes
Our KinderPiano® class "for little fingers" is a great way for preschoolers through first graders to begin their musical studies. This is an ideal introductory class for the child who is fascinated by musical instruments; who is easily engaged in music; who may have participated enthusiastically in a 'mommy and me' preschool music group, and for the child whose parents understand the importance of starting a child young in music. (See 'How Young is Too Young?.')
Preschoolers enjoy learning basic piano skills, including listening, rhythm, form, and simple note-reading. Each child sits at their own keyboard during class. Parents sit alongside their child.
This five-session class teaches good practice habits through positive reinforcement (including plenty of stickers and prizes!). We've found that five weeks is just the right amount of time to determine if a child is ready to take music lessons. The group is fun; children like to be with other children, and the teacher makes lessons engaging and goal-oriented. At the conclusion of five weeks, the students get dressed up, participate in a recital, and receive a certificate.
After the five-week class
- some children will move on to KinderPiano® II.
- some parents will enroll their children in private lessons.
- some children go into our KinderViolin® program. KinderPiano® is a prerequisite for KinderViolin®. If the child is 4 1/2 or older, you may ask the teacher for a readiness assessment.
- some parents may find their child is not yet mature enough to continue music lessons, but will pick it up again when they mature. Even if your child is not ready, rest assured that participation in the program will benefit them in many ways, and they will draw on the lessons learned when they are ready to try music again.
KinderPiano® students are grouped by age:
- 3 1/2 to 4 1/2; and
- K-1rst grade.
Keyboards are provided for each child in class, and low-cost keyboard rentals (or rent-to-buy) are available for home use.
Private Piano Lessons
Our piano program serves students at all levels. A large staff of skilled piano teachers enables us to make the best match for each student’s needs, interests, and personality. Students at every level are encouraged to participate in our monthly recitals.Piano/Voice Combo
The combo class splits the lesson between learning basic piano skills and singing. For children who love to sing, this is an ideal class. They learn the basics of music, including ear training, rhythm, note-reading, and more, through the voice as well as the keyboard. Highly recommended!Recitals
Our recitals take place every month, on a Saturday evening, at the Music Cottage. Students dress in performance attire and invite relatives and friends. There is a reception following the performance. There is no extra charge for these recitals.
